Sessa Aurunca

Visiting Sessa Aurunca, its hamlets and surroundings, means discovering an unusual Campania, certainly far from the most frequented tourist routes, but no less fascinating and suggestive. Hidden villages, millenary history, nature and good food: these and many other marvels await the visitor to welcome him in an unforgettable place, along a journey of discovery.

The town of Sessa Aurunca is located in the province of Caserta, very close to Lazio, and comprises no less than 26 hamlets, including part of Baia Domizia and its coastline. Its extension makes the territory as varied and heterogeneous as possible, offering visitors the opportunity to range between sea, hills and urban landscapes. The flat area includes the coast and the fertile Plain of Garigliano, where we find numerous vineyards and olive groves for the production of wine (especially Falerno) and Terre Aurunche DOP oil. In addition, this area is involved in cattle breeding and buffaloes in particular, while proceeding inland, a hilly area develops. The actual urban centre is located on the tuffaceous slope of the Roccamonfina mountain and is part of the Roccamonfina - Foce Garigliano Regional Park, a protected area in which unspoilt nature can be found and where it is possible to go hiking and walking to discover the various species of flora and fauna.

Sessa Aurunca is located in a very fertile area where farms and various types of cultivation abound and, in addition to vineyards and olive groves, apple, peach and cherry orchards are frequent, as well as the cultivation of vegetables such as cauliflowers, peppers and aubergines. In addition, cattle breeding guarantees an excellent production of dairy products and delicious cheeses: mozzarella, fior di latte, caciocavalli cannot be missed, as well as the special 'e marzo or peruto case, which are rarer products to find (made with goat's milk) and which retain a strong and distinctive taste. Meat processing is also a well-established tradition and it will be a pleasure to taste sausages, soppressate, capicolli and the very special nnoglia, a sausage made from pig entrails and flavoured with spices and chilli pepper. The mushrooms of the Roccamonfina mountain are famous throughout the area and are perfect for full-bodied first courses that recall the flavours of the land, perhaps accompanied by a glass of Falerno wine. The desserts are those typical of pastry making in Campania, with a special focus on those dedicated to festivities, including the pastiera typical of Easter festivities, the fried and cream-filled zeppola eaten on St. Joseph's Day and the struffoli and mustaccioli that are homemade but can also be found in bakeries and pastry shops during the Christmas festivities.

There is no shortage of events in Sessa Aurunca. In February, carnival, especially in some hamlets, is a festival with a long tradition and is celebrated on Shrove Tuesday with parades of floats in a joyful atmosphere that involves everyone. Holy Week is a time of year that sees the participation of the entire community in religious services and events that begin on Holy Monday and culminate with processions dedicated to the mysteries of the Passion organised on Good Friday evening and Holy Saturday at dawn, by the light of torches and bonfires. In May, the town's history is the protagonist with the Grand Tournament of the Quarters, in which historical episodes dating back to the Middle Ages and the Renaissance are re-enacted, and competitions and games are organised in which the nine ancient quarters of Sessa Aurunca take part; the event ends with a costume procession and the famous and spectacular crossbow competition. July, on the other hand, sees the Tammorra festival, an event dedicated to this traditional dance that is more and more eagerly awaited and populated every year, where music accompanies the tasting of typical local products. In August, the Sagra della Salsiccia di San Castrese (San Castrese sausage festival) is held, an occasion not to be missed to taste the delicious meat produced in the area. To these fixed appointments are added new ones often dedicated to music or the history of the town. Finally, the year ends with a series of events organised during the Christmas period, such as crib exhibitions, concerts and traditional end-of-year carols on 31 December.
