The town of Sorrento is one of the best known and most popular centres of the Sorrento Peninsula (to which it gives its name). Located in the province of Naples, on the portion of coastline that almost represents the lower limit of the Gulf, it is washed by the Tyrrhenian Sea and is situated a short distance from Punta Campanella and the Monti Lattari. The city is located 47 metres above sea level on a spur of tufa rock that characterises its urban organisation and conformation. As far as the fabric of the city is concerned, it is possible to identify three salient zones: the centre, with its fulcrum in the famous Piazza Tasso (named after the poet Torquato Tasso, who was born in Sorrento), the historic core with its narrow streets dotted with artisan workshops and small shops selling souvenirs and local liqueurs (one of which is limoncello, a must-try), and the beach, which is located at sea level and is therefore lower than the other zones. Sorrento's geographic position is also very favourable because it allows the traveller to move easily to some of the most beautiful coastal centres or to discover natural beauties such as: the Monti Lattari trails, the Marine Reserve of Punta Campanella and the Bagni della Regina Giovanna.

Unmissable for those visiting Sorrento is a stroll along the elegant Corso Italia, one of the main streets, where shops and boutiques alternate with excellent ice-cream parlours where you can enjoy, in addition to ice cream, delicious lemon granitas. Alternatively, you can choose to have a coffee or an aperitif in the famous Piazza Tasso, where the statue of the poet of the same name stands. Seek out the narrow alleyways and lose yourself among the artisan shops that work leather (among the many products you will certainly notice the typical sandals embellished with stones and other materials). The municipal villa is sheer above the sea, with a terrace overlooking Vesuvius, and surrounded by greenery: enjoy a stop in this enchanted place and don't forget to visit, in the immediate vicinity, the Church of San Francesco with its small (but marvellous) Renaissance cloister, in a verdant atmosphere where silence and peace reign. A not-to-be-missed experience will be discovering the craftsmen who work according to this centuries-old tradition and discovering the jewellery they make every day with great care. This art can also be found at the Correale Museum, a museum that houses works and artefacts from different eras and details the history of this beautiful city. In Sorrento, trekking enthusiasts will also be satisfied: the city is located a short distance from several trails on the Lattari Mountains, from Punta Campanella where you can immerse yourself in wild nature and admire a breathtaking view, and from the Bagni della Regina Giovanna, a unique place where ancient architectural remains from the Roman era overlooking the sea frame emerald waters in which to dive and take long swims. Moreover, Sorrento is not far from Capri and is connected to it by hydrofoil or ferry: an unmissable opportunity to visit one of Italy's most beautiful and refined islands!
Sorrento's gastronomic traditions are diverse and many are known and famous throughout the world. If you are travelling to this city, here is, therefore, what you absolutely must not miss: as far as first courses are concerned, we find Sorrentine-style potato gnocchi, served with sauce, lots of stringy mozzarella and a fragrant basil leaf; alternatively, you can choose a lighter dish, spaghetti with walnuts: in Sorrento, walnuts are a typical product that, in addition to being eaten alone, is excellent as a tasty addition to spaghetti with garlic, oil and chilli pepper. Seafood accompanies linguine or risotto alla pescatora, while grilled or baked fish is an excellent dish cooked to perfection in almost all local restaurants. If you want to taste a very speciality, then you can opt for the squid alla sorrentina stuffed with eggs, caciocavallo cheese, parsley, pepper and mozzarella. In Campania, especially in the summer, the Caprese salad (made with tomatoes, mozzarella, basil and extra virgin olive oil) is one of the most popular dishes and in Sorrento, local tomatoes are used to prepare it (immediately recognisable because they are round, large and ribbed) which give an extra flavour to this salad and all others, thanks to their fresh and delicate taste. Provolone del Monaco is another food not to be missed: we are talking about a typical provolone from the Monti Lattari, intense and hearty, perfect to be savoured with a local Falanghina DOC. For dessert, you can choose from an infinite number of traditional Campania dishes, and you should not miss trying the delizia al limone (a sweet dome of sponge cake filled and garnished with cream made from Sorrento lemons) and the Santa Rosa, a cake born in the nearby town of Conca de' Marini, which would be a fragrant sfogliatella (similar to the Neapolitan one), but filled with custard and enriched with a fragrant black cherry.
Various events are organised in Sorrento throughout the year, here are some of the most evocative. During the Christmas period, Sorrento becomes a magical place: the illuminations dress the town up and among the streets and alleys there is a romantic and cheerful atmosphere. In October, in the locality of Priora, there is the grape festival where the tradition of the grape harvest and new wine is revived. In May, instead, it is beer that is the protagonist during the Festa della Birra, at the Sorrento & Friends brewery. In September there is the long-awaited Sagra del Pesce azzurro (Blue Fish Festival), at Marina Grande, an occasion that celebrates the characteristic flavours of the sea, typical of the Sorrento Peninsula. During the summer in the city of Sorrento, new events, meetings and manifestations are organised every year, ranging from culture to music, to theatre and local traditions: to discover them, all you have to do is keep up to date with the programme of appointments, to enjoy your trip even more fully enveloped in local culture.
